THE F.A.Q.

DORMITORY LIFE
Students are sorted into houses at their school interview, based on the same personality traits as in Harry Potter. Until sixth form, students are dormed four to a room (which does not mean four to a year!). When they reach sixth form, they either have individual rooms or are two to a room.

Boys and girls are allowed in each other's rooms, however, there are rules. The door must be open, and there is a '3 feet on the ground', and it's roughly as sounds; Between two persons of the opposite sex in one room, three feet must be on the ground, IE- no lying in bed together. In fact, the rules all out state no sexual activity on Hogwarts grounds. This is heavily ignored.

Students are allowed into the dormitories of others, for example, Gryffindor Sirius can go visit Ravenclaw Aurora. The houses are simply for organization, and to help break down a big mass in to easier portions.

EXTRA-CURRICULARS & SPORTS
A sport or physical activity is required of every student, every term, with the exception of students pursuing an A Level in PE. A sport can be at an inter school level, or you can play for house teams, and casually compete between the houses. Students may not be a member of both the interscholastic team and the house team for the same sport. There are also other options, such as dance classes, signing up for gym time.

Students are also required, starting at year 10, to participate in community service activities. Twenty four hours a year from every student is required. They can fulfill this requirement in any way as long as it is approved by their Head of House. Additionally, Wednesday afternoon has recreation time. During this time, some of the school's societies have their meetings, and various community service trips are available for participation, such as cleaning the local parks, or volunteering at the local primary schools.

Hogwarts has lots of student run societies, all of which meet at least once a week, either during recreation time in the afternoon, or at other times that work for the society members (After dinner is a popular time, as well.)

There are still prefects and Head Boy and Girl, but Prefecture does not start until Sixth Form.

DRESS CODE
Any time classes are in session, students are expected to be in uniform. Said uniform consists of-

FEMALES:
    • A skirt, in charcoal grey, no more than an inch and a half above the knee. Black tights or grey knee high socks, weather permitting. Black dress shoe, with a heel no more than two inches.
    • White button down blouse, nothing overly fitted. Long or short sleeves permitted, depending on weather. Cutesy cap sleeves are right out. You know what we mean. Tie in house colours.
    • There is an option of a charcoal knitted sweater vest, cardigan and blazer. Everyone is required to wear the blazer, though you may request permission to take your blazer off during class.
    • Hair colour must be natural, no excessive jewelry or piercings.

MALES:
    • Charcoal grey trousers, black socks, black dress shoe, no boots. You can get away with grey or white socks, but don't try to pull of anything crazy.
    • White button down, long or short sleeves, depending on weather. Tie in house colour.
    • There is an option of a charcoal knitted sweater vest, cardigan and blazer. Everyone is required to wear the blazer, though you may request permission to take your blazer off during class.
    • Hair colour must be natural, no excessive jewelry or piercings. Earrings are permissible come sixth form.

The last Friday of every month is a casual Friday. Dress must still be conservative, nothing dirty or ripped, but trainers, jeans, and trousers for women are permissible.

THE UK EDUCATION SYSTEM
This should be covered in the classes post. If you have any further questions regarding the UK education system, please contact the mods and we'll do our best to answer your questions or put you in contact with our friendly, neighborhood Brit.

HOW THE JOURNALS WORK
• IJ should be used as though it's a secret network on the school intranet on which the students have created blogs unviewable to teachers.
• Icons are OOC and used only to reflect the mood of the character.
• Crossouts signify something that a character has typed and then deleted.
• Feel free to have your characters make mobile phonecalls, IM each other, and email through the journals - just title each post to let us all know what's going on.
• We're used to comments such as 'Warded to Marauders' or 'Private to Sirius'. Yeah, basically these don't exist here. However: if your character feels particularly inclined to comment on something privately, just leave a comment with 'IM to So-and-So'.
• Feel free to friends-lock posts to specific people. However: keep it realistic. You can't make posts with eight million LJ cuts, each locked to a different person on IJ, therefore your characters can't do it either. Make sure you put whoever the post is locked to in the subject line.
• If it's likely that your character can use HTML, have them use sparkly text and link pictures and amusing internet sites and lolcats and whatever the hell they want.
• Characters can log into each other's journals if they know the password. And then they can read friends-locked and private posts. And there will be drama. Just saying.

INFORMATION ABOUT THE SCHOOL ITSELF
• Main sport is rugby. However, students are free to pick whatever sport they want to play - hockey, netball, football, cricket, tennis, or whatever. Their most important matches will be against other schools; however, the houses play friendly matches against each other.
• Each student studies three subjects for their A-level exams at the end of their last year of school. These subjects are generally geared towards whatever they want to study at university, and what their strengths are: for example, a student wanting to study medicine would be taking Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Or a character who wants to study law might take History, English and Latin. Some students can take four A-levels but the fourth must be in a native language or a language they have spoken since they were young. They have a lot of free periods a week. They'll love it.
• There are seven years at the school. They start when they're eleven and leave when they're eighteen.
